Education in the Future…..

Posted on June 30th, 2008 in Classroom Stuff by jlietze  Tagged , , ,

I had to quickly share this with you - here are some responses from my Year 6 (10 year old) students to a question posed using one of Tony Ryan’s Thinkers Keys: “The Prediction Key”

What will schools be like in 100 years?

I found the following themes:

  1. Digital technology will still be around.
  2. There is a feeling that technology will continue to make things easier.
  3. Schools will be in interesting places eg: sky, underwater.
  4. Some students believe technology will replace Teachers.

There were no real surprises as I felt students visionary skills were restricted to what they have seen on TV EXCEPT for two students that I thought were worth noting:

Does this surprise or freak anyone else?!

These two students showed me that they could think outside the box. I will therefore be watching their development closely.

Interesting to note the emphasis in children’s minds of schools as physical places and the role of technology in all of this - as you say, not surprising. For me the important question to be asked about the future of education is at a level above this - “what sort of society do we want to live in in the future” - which leads to discussions about not only the ‘place’ where learning happens, but also its purpose and the relationship between formal learning and economic prosperity on the one hand, and the development of a ‘decent society’ on the other (taking into account the development of social morays, ethics and morality etc)

Great to see you initiating these discussions with your students - wonder what they’ll come up with if you ask them to think more broadly?

Wow, now that’s thinking! I love the use of VoiceThread and Tony Ryan’s thinking keys - way to go! Two of my favourite tools for the classroom. :)
